This Nation is about to issue two blank cheques.
If rumors are to be believed, the ouster of Sachin Pilot is being quietly encouraged by Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi behind the scenes. I hope the Congress does not break up further. I am no supporter, but I fear the idea of one party, majority rule without an opposition, especially when it is such a huge majority. It is not healthy for a party in a democracy to rule a country unopposed. That is like giving them a blank cheque. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
For Rahul Gandhi, the elimination of opposition may seem like a victory, but it is a Phyrric victory at best and a disaster in the making. It may give him a chance to dominate a party that is at its weakest time in its history. But presiding over a Congress party without young blood and without challengers will be like banging on an empty vessel – create a lot of noise but very little sense. It is already a top heavy party with a lot of historical baggage, waiting to topple. The next election is a few years away, but at this rate, the already decimated party is going to be wiped off the political map of India. So, for Rahul too, this may look like a blank cheque, but as Mahatma Gandhi said, it is “a blank cheque drawn on a crashing bank”.
